Late winter beehive check-up

winterized beehives in the snow

Winter is waning.  During a pleasant day last week (above freezing!) I took a quick peek under the lid of a few beehives to see if the bees survived the cold weather.

There was a surprising amount of activity under the insulated top covers that I opened.  It's still to early to crack the propolis seal on the main brood/super boxes but to see how their winter food supply is holding up - but the vitality that I witnessed is definitely encouraging.

I'll keep you updated at we slowly approach the Canadian spring.
